How to crate train your poodle puppy...
Crate training a puppy is all about making the crate a cozy and safe space for them. Start by introducing your puppy to the crate gradually, leaving the door open and letting them explore it on their own. You can toss in some treats or their favorite chew to make it more inviting. Cover the crate with a blanket or crate cover and put the crate in a room that crying will not disturb you. Addionally play rain sounds on a device such as alexa, google home, or speaker using youtube. We do this for our puppies and adult dogs.
Once your puppy seems comfortable, begin closing the door for short periods while you’re nearby. Gradually increase the time they spend inside, always rewarding them with praise or treats when they stay calm. This helps them associate the crate with positive experiences. Do not let your puppy out when they are crying as they will associate crying with being let out of the crate.
Initially at night, you may have to let your puppy out once a night to potty. Some puppies are able to hold it through the night at 8 weeks of age and some may need until 9 or 10 weeks of age to be able to go through the night. Removing food and water 2 hours before bedtime will help prevent nighttime accidents.
Consistency is key, so establish a routine for crate time, especially during bedtime or when you leave the house. Make sure they have plenty of exercise and playtime outside the crate to keep them happy and tired before going into the crate. With patience and positive reinforcement, your puppy will learn to love their crate as their own little den.
